Norway: Day One

Our first full day in Norway started with a lie-in of biblical proportions for me, 10 a.m. I think the past few days of camping, packing, saying goodbyes and travelling caught up with me and i got in a solid 11 hours sleep. We got up slowly, went to the supermarket, stocked up on cheese, bread, fishcakes, reindeer sausage and then home again for a lazy brunch. In the afternoon we went into Bergen centre, visited the fish market, tried whale meat, bought half a kilo of fresh prawns and loaded up with maps at a book store. The weather cleared in the afternoon, the sun blazing the mountains in light and the clouds that had shrouded the peaks drifted away. We drove into the 'nature' as they call the countryside here and explored several roads into the mountains looking for trailheads and ended up at the fjord in the photo, watching the sun set behind the mountains.

Hey there Joe, glad you've landed in your new country safe and well. Can't believe it took you so long to buy maps and try different foods ;-)
Does your girlfriend know that now you have maps, she'll only see you when you return to 'base' to buy more titanium/breathable kit off the t'interweb?!
Have fun - keep the blogs coming

PS - they collected your car this morning. They were moaning about it not being clean so we showed them mine. That shut 'em up!

Cheers Cy, I don't think I took too long to buy maps, it was about 20 hours after we landed at the airport! I haven't put them down since though, scouring the landscape for trails and camping spots. I've got my fishing licence too, unfortunately my fishing gear is still in storage...

They lease company should've been impressed with the car, that was a years worth of grime!

I know PTC, but spare a thought, I can't find Marmite anywhere!

I always think Norway looks a bit like Scotland on steroids. Winter should be interesting :o)

That's some move you've made there btw. All the best with it.

Cheers Big Kev, having scandalously never been to Scotland when I was living in England I can only go on the photos I see on various websites and blogs but from what I've seen so far I agree with you. Yes, winter will be interesting here, apparently I will HAVE to learn to ski...
